Phew! That was close!
I’ve just watched Sky News reporting that Nick Clegg has been elected leader of the Liberal Democrat party. As a party member I cast my vote a couple of weeks ago for Chris Huhne and was pleased to hear that he was catching up on Nick, the bookies’ favourite. But I never expected the result to be so close! 20998 votes for Nick and 20477 for Chris. And suggestions that there was a recount!
I’m in no doubt that Nick Clegg will make a superb leader. I would have preferred Chris but I am sure that he will play a very major role in Nick’s team. Indeed the party will have benefited significantly from the exposure the two of them have gained over the last few months and Nick does, I am sure, realise that Chris is a tremendous asset to the party.
Now that the leadership of the party has been settled once and for all, let’s hope that we can now get on and deal with the many issues that are crying out for Liberal solutions.
