It was no joke!
Yesterday I received a telephone message from a near neighbour inviting me up the road to see a peacock that had arrived in her garden. Having listened to Radio 4’s Breakfast programme telling the story of the RSPB ‘repatriating’ over staying summer visitors by providing members with bird traps and having been told of BBC television’s film of flying penguins, I assumed that my neighbour was also playing an avian April Fool joke on me!
Today I’ve discovered that she genuinely did have a peacock in her garden! Apparantly it had been around for two days and had found a cozy corner next to her house to roost overnight. After she had called the police, the Borough Council and the RSPCA to no avail, she eventually heard that the trout farm on the Longton Road kept a peacock! A quick phone call and a very relieved trout farmer owner was soon up Nicholls Lane to reclaim the rather subdued escapee!
